Last weekend, I accompanied Tiffany to a Wisconsin LGBTQ+ History Project event at Walker's Pint featuring an exhibit in honor of Lesbian Visibility Week. We were, briefly, visible lesbians, in a bar full of similarly-visible lesbians.
It felt great, and also very weird.
See, I've been home for the past four and a half years. No indoor dining, no bars, no socializing. There's a pandemic on, you see.
We were respirator'd - N95 for me, KN95 for Tiffany, as we always are, whenever we're beyond our home's thresholds.
We weren't there long - just an hour or so, just there to put in an appearance, and then to take down and take home the exhibit panels and easels, because Tiffany needed to set up the same exhibit at City Hall the following morning.
Whatever other social/anti-social, accessible/ableist, COVID-smart/copium contrasts may have impressed me powerfully through the experience, it was also just heartening to be in a room with people I didn't know, listen to amplified, rhythmic music, and dance when the tune was one I liked.
It reminded me that I used to love going to clubs, once, a very, very long time ago.
I would go to a club again, if there weren't a plague, and if the club were like the ones I loved in the mid-1990s, full of people of every color and shape and size and class, with the DJ in a booth behind mirrored glass, just happy dancing people in the dark and the lights. Instead, I have to DIY. So on Friday 26 April 2024, at 6pm Central US time, let's throw down online for Phoole & the Gang Show 476. It's a dance party. That's it. JUST DANCE PARTY.
